Panel 1: I’m glad that I—or 2006-Era Me, at least—attempted the novel riff of making the sound FX “WHOOSH” appear all, well, “motion-blurred” behind that flurry of speed lines, but I can’t say that the effect was even vaguely close to being successful. Still, as a comics artist, you gotta keep trying out new visual storytelling approaches, even if the result ends up in the comic-page equivalent of a FailArmy faceplant.

Panel 5: Yeahp, in case this fact wasn’t made absolutely clear, here Emp-disguised Ninjette is pointedly echoing Clubby Goon’s cry of “HYAAH!” from panel 1 as she bludgeons him in the head. Care for a little snark with your head trauma, folks?

Panel 6: Note the rare, vertically oriented “GOTCHA!” word balloon. Gotta say, the vertical orientation of (most) text in manga is yet another advantage of Japanese comics, as it seems much easier to fit vertical copy in comics-page layouts, as opposed to the more demanding horizontal orientation of English-language dialogue. (Your Mileage May Vary on this point, of course.)
