We continue serialization of the collected version of the three-issue 2017 miniseries Empowered and the Soldier of Love, written and laid out by me and featuring full-color artwork by the Chilean webcomic artist Karla Diaz; today, we're looking through more of the bonus material tacked onto the end of the collection.

Note that the color work discussed here wound up hamstringing production on the miniseries a fair bit by the third issue, as the additional task of coloring the artwork slowed Karla down after a while, hence my bud Ryan Kinnaird filling in with coloring during the final chapter. In retrospect, this was a bizarrely foolish scheduling blunder on my part, as penciling, inking and coloring a 24-page comic (plus cover illo!) on a monthly basis would be a brutal workload for any artist, let alone one like Karla who hadn't worked in this specific format before.

Why, that's almost as goofy as assuming I could write, pencil, ink & screentone a 24-page book (plus cover!) on a monthly basis, which was how I started work on the first Dirty Pair miniseries in 1988. The reality soon became clear that I could not possibly pull off such a stunt on an ongoing basis, hence the successive DP projects being scheduled with generous lead times that essentially gave me six weeks or so to produce each issue. Ah, but lemme tell ya, if the published (mini)series is still being released on a monthly basis, that scheduled "cushion" will always, always run out on you by the last few issues.

At least in 1988 I had the excuse of being young and dumb about scheduling matters like this; in 2017, alas, I proved to be old and still dumb. Ouch!

Today’s Patreon update: Originally done as a means of scratching out more worktime to complete the long-gestating Empowered vol. 12, I've switched over to a Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday Patreon posting schedule that won't feature the fixed content format I previously used. So, who knows what today's post might feature? Could be Life Drawing or Distressed Damsels content (both of which are featured at least three times per month), or something in the Work Stages, Vintage Con Sketches or Design departments, or possibly something entirely new, such as updates on fantasy test projects The Last Party and The Chaste and the Chained. Golly!
