Volume 1 Page 176

Yeahp, the previous two appalling pages were the sordid origin of the Superhomey who now calls himself “Protean”—though others still call him by his original supranym, “Glorpp,” as seen in the earlier story “Say My Name.”

In panel 1, notice that dark, odd-looking shapes are faintly visible within Protean’s globby body, a short-lived art riff that I immediately forgot about after drawing this page. Perhaps this is a visualization of his digestive system at work? No idea, to be honest.

In panel 2, thrill to the very first appearance of the Superhomeys’ as-yet-unnamed winged roboserpent, which I created on the fly—pun semi-intended!—during this page as a means of aerial transport for the team members. I’ve long planned a Guest Artist story involving this enigmatic mecha, who has received appallingly little love during the series as a whole; the poor guy mainly tends to get himself flattened during battles with giant-scale enemies, I’m saddened to admit. In a twist that will, I suspect, be of little surprise to long-time Empowered readers, this mystery machine has a rather tragic backstory. SPOILER ALERT: The big robofella’s supranym is “Mechzalcoatl,” as mentioned in passing during Empowered vol. 3, though I’m reasonably sure I spelled the name differently in that book.
