Panel 3: I’m frankly amazed that I remembered to keep that wee smear of ice cream—or whatever the heck that might be—on Spooky’s cheek throughout this entire story. More often, I tend to eventually overlook such visual continuity details as the pages fly by.

Also, I no longer have any idea what the concluding profanity in Spooky’s third word balloon might be. This is why, later on in the series, I began only partially censoring “bad words,” so that the intended cussing would be clearer.

Panel 4: I suspect that Mindf**k’s spacesuit is at least partially based on one of Kenichi Sonoda’s original designs for the anime Gall Force. It’s certainly not directly based on said design, as I’m not sure if I still had any of my old Gall Force art books handy a decade ago, but a lot of Sonoda-sensei’s old design riffs from that project (and Bubblegum Crisis, too) were so strongly influential at the beginning of my career that they echo in my work many years later. BTW, I would normally cringe a tad at using the frankly “weeaboo”-ish term “Sonoda-sensei,” but he really was one of my key early Japanese influences. (Plus, screw it, I predate the term “weeaboo” by quite some time.)

Panel 5: And here we see another example of how obviously Empowered was not originally meant for webcomic serialization, as Mindf**k’s important line of (telepathic) dialogue has to be put on pause over the weekend. When the concluding line appears on Monday, I sincerely doubt readers will remember the first half of the statement. Oh, well.
