Panel 2: Fairly sure “buxotic” derives from a bombastic clip excerpted from the Russ Meyer pseudo-documentary Mondo Topless, as often played back in the day on the old Opie and Anthony radio show.
Panel 3: Emp's second word balloon is an incredibly, indeed ludicrously obscure reference to a scene in the 1981 movie Ghost Story, which was a largely disappointing adaptation of Peter Straub’s epic horror novel. However, one weirdly hilarious scene from the flick that stuck with me featured Alice Krige—yes, the future Borg Queen!—browbeating a hapless Craig Wasson into a reckless tryst in a college bathroom with the stern imperative, “Now, or never again.”-Adam Warren
