With this page, feast your eyes on a rare flourish of art imitating life imitating art—or, more accurately, art imitating art imitating art, as cosplay is certainly its own unique form of creativity. See, Emp’s high heels, here, are based on a real-life Emp costume created and worn by famed cosplayer Riki “Riddle” Lecotey. In fact, I even did an Emp drawing for Riki based on one of her cosplay photos.

The idea of Emp’s fake suit having high heels per Riddle’s cosplay cracked me up to no end, so I added that bit when this visual riff reappeared in Empowered vol. 5. Howeva, the in-universe costume had already been established back in vol. 1 as PVC-based, unlike Riddle’s Spandex-based effort. Just as well, as I’m no fan of rendering the pebbly texture of stretch fabrics, as detailed in my commentary the previous time that Emp’s self-cosplay appeared.

My hat is off to anyone attempting Emp cosplay, period, as the outfit is about as unfriendly to real-life recreation as anything in comics. Still, gotta admit that the footwear issue is one I hadn’t considered; having to walk around a convention center in stocking feet all day doesn’t seem terribly appealing, come to think of it.
