Behold, the first Empowered page featuring five horizontal, “panoramic” panels, a layout which is one of my favorites from the series. Note that Empowered’s page format is much “squatter” than that of the conventional comics I used to draw, as the series is drawn on 8.5” X 11” copy paper rather than the proportionally “taller” 10” X 15” art board I once used. The original pages’ lack of vertical dimension, alas, hampers me from using some of the layouts I preferred in my previous comics work. Three-tiered pages with high panel counts are only a memory now, as the squat Empowered format leaves little headspace for word balloons in such layouts. (Three panoramic panels on a page, by contrast, works quite well for this series; hard to get a whole lotta storytelling accomplished with a steady diet of three-panel pages, though.)
