This story’s title is a direct reference to a 1937 radio play of the same name (more or less), as discussed at some length in Stephen King’s book of horror essays Dance Macabre. Part of the radio horror series Lights Out, this episode dealt with an ill-fated fellow paying a visit to the dentist that does not go very well at all. I’ve never actually heard the radio play—though I believe it’s available as a download somewhere, no doubt—but King’s favorable mention of the drama made enough an impression on me that the title sprang to mind when I wrote this tale of a similarly unfortunate dental appointment.
