Panel 4: A rare appearance of the cartoony visual riff of “sweat droplets” inside a word balloon, as opposed to lurking near Emp’s head. I know that mangaka Naoki Urasawa (Pluto, 20th Century Boys) was famously dismissive of the use of “sweat drops,” pointing out somewhat puzzlingly that they don’t exist in reality—but neither do almost all of the cartoonier and more exaggerated riffs used by cartoonists not striving for strict “realism,” which is almost all of us. All I can say is, you’ll take away my goofy-ass sweat droplets when you pry them from my cold, dead fingers. (Then again, as I am sailing into the euphemistic “autumn of my years,” you might not have to wait all that long to start prying.)
