I’m generally not all that fond of grid-based layouts, gotta admit, as I find them too regimented and inflexible for the modes of comics storytelling that I prefer. (Let us not speak of the tiresomely ubiquitous 9-panel Watchmen grid, with which artist Dave Gibbons inadvertently delivered a fearsome tool into the hands of pretentious, control-freak comics writers decades later.) Howeva, dang if a grid-based comic layout like this one isn’t a great way to convey a whole lotta storytelling beats in a single page. An 8-panel page with a greater variety of panel sizes would, in all likelihood, have seemed far more cramped and crowded.
