As I’ve mentioned before, in the very earliest days of the series—in fact, long before I ever thought of this project as potentially being a series—Empowered’s lead character had no name whatsoever. I’d already dubbed the growing collection of joke strips Empowered as a wink and/or nod at the fact that our long-suffering and distress-prone heroine was so often far from any hint of empowerment—but I hadn’t yet arrived at the insight that her actual “supranym” could be Empowered. Rather, this only occurred to me after one of my artist friends, ace cartoonist Lea Hernandez, happened to refer to the unnamed protagonist as “Emp” after seeing the first few rounds of the nascent project’s emailed jpegs. And lo, thus I only belatedly realized that Empowered could be both project title and character name. Huzzah!
