Continuing a theme from yesterday's commentary, after Emp dialogue addressing Spearmint evoked our heroine's body-image issues for a commenter grousing that this character foible of hers was "getting old," I have to note that these somewhat oblique references to Emp's insecurities arguably marked the first time in the 80-odd pages of Empowered vol. 11 that such issues have arisen at all—and going back into vol. 10, this might have been the first time in 200-odd pages that she might have displayed such behavior. (Well, arguably.)

Just take a peep back at vol. 1 sometime, dear readers, for a gander at a much less confident Emp truly gripped by crippling self-doubt and incessant, even debilitating body-image issues on a vastly more frequent basis. Despite her current state of "barely holding [herself] together," our heroine really has come a long way from her earlier appearances, in a manner that evolved organically over the series' unfolding rather than being anything planned out on my part.
