Panel 1: Not a big fan of overlong word-balloon tails, but this is one context in which they’re halfway defensible—that is, when dialogue is place at a fair remove from the character speaking it, and you need to make clear exactly which person in the panel is doing the blithering. Still, would’ve been a much better idea to use a panel layout that didn’t require such a conspicuously lengthy and unwieldy lettering technique.
Panel 2: Used a goofy-ass visual in Thugboy’s thought balloon, here, to convey a sentiment that might otherwise—or might still—strike some readers as sexist or misogynistic—or possibly “gynophobic,” a term that seemed to be gaining traction 20-odd years ago, but seems to have faded from use even in the, ah, “progressive-iest” of progressive discourse.
Panel 3: To once again quote the Admiral, “IT’S A TRAAAAP!” No, it’s just excessive trapezoid-muscle depiction on ol’ Thugboy.
Panel 5: I like the term “spandexers,” even though the trademark owners would no doubt be less than thrilled. “Spandex®-ers” would, I suppose, be more acceptable. (Or would it?)
Panel 6: Also like the term “superposse,” which I’m sad to say I never used again in Empowered. Oh, well.
