Panels 1 and 3: Note the unusually booming—or, here, “BKOOMing”—sound FX used for the 50-cal rifle’s shot. Even this slightly larger than usual FX fails to convey just how incredibly, shatteringly loud a big-bore Barrett would sound in an enclosed space like this; I’ve only ever heard one fired in an outdoor shooting range, and that was still unbelievably loud, despite multiple forms of hearing protection. Might be a bit of a problem, though, to have everyone in the room unable to understand each other afterward. “WHAT’S THAT? SAY AGAIN?” Still, I’ve often thought about tiptoeing closer to realism on this point, and deploying GIGANTIC, page-devouring sound FX to convey the devastating volume of an indoors gunshot.

Panel 4: Note that the term “uparmor” was very much in vogue in the mid-2000s, with the term often referenced to reinforcing US military vehicles against IEDs in Iraq and Afghanistan. (Just don’t ask me whether or not those conflicts actually took place in the Empverse.)
