Panel 1: I have no explanation whatsoever for why the hell a supersuit-clad Emp is speaking to her mom on a flip phone, when we’ve already seen that she can make telephone calls (with the familiar thumb-and-forefinger “phone” gesture) using the hypermembrane. In fact, the punchline of this chapter involves that very ability of the supersuit! A rather inexplicable misstep on my part, which I’d never noticed until writing this commentary.

Panel 4: When referring to the Blazing-Eyed Devilgoat, many readers refer to him simply as “the belt.” I’m fond of a possible metatextual riff in which he’d wax wroth—nay, sorely wroth—at being addressed so as disrespectfully as “the belt.” Outrageous!

Panel 5: I strongly suspect that I stole this colorful—indeed, pungent—anecdote from somewhere else, but I’ll be dipped if I can remember precisely where. I can assure you that said anecdote isn’t from personal childhood experience—but the bygone tale of youthful, daredevil yore that follows on the next page definitely is.
