Panel 3: I’ve long held that, whatever the hell form of conspicuously magical material that most comics’ superhero costumes are made out of, it is emphatically not Spandex or Lycra or the synthetic-fiber like. In fact, I’ve had an Empowered plot thread in mind for well over a decade now that would explore and explain the unearthly and—ahem—“unrealistic” aspects of superhero costuming, but I seriously doubt I’ll ever get around to said exploration and explanation. Oh, well.

Panel 4: Oh, wisecracking. Or “f**king wisecracking,” as Oyuki-chan might put. Would that I had time today to unleash my long-simmering jeremiad about the absolute, inescapable ubiquity of lazy, half-assed, crappily written, drama-deflating wisecrackery in contemporary genre fiction of all sorts. (Lord knows the success of a decade-plus of Marvel movies hasn’t helped matters much.) Luckily, I don’t have time for such jeremiad-unleashing today!
