High School Hell p.17

We continue serialization of the collected edition of the six-issue 2018 miniseries Empowered and Sistah Spooky’s High School Hell, written and laid out by me and featuring art and lettering by Guest Artist Carla “Speed” McNeil and coloring by Jenn Manley Lee.

Continuing my exploration of 2017-18 Me's choice to roll with a brawny and ultimately disastrous total of six issues for this miniseries, I'd say that length was driven by the more creatively successful Marvel projects Livewires (2004) and Iron Man: Hypervelocity (2005), both of which ran for six issues.

Ah, but you'd think I might've remembered that Livewires ran into fairly severe deadline problems by the second half of the miniseries, given the demandingly detailed and tech-intensive workload the project delivered. I wound up pitching in and penciling (and occasionally inking) at least half of the pages from issues 4-6; I drew all of the most tech-heavy pages myself, so artist Rick Mays could concentrate on the character work he was so great at. (This now seems insane, by the way, as nowadays I would sooner light myself on fire than draw 33-odd pages dominated by technical detail.)

To be continued!

Today’s Patreon update: Originally done as a means of scratching out more worktime to complete the long-gestating Empowered vol. 12, I've switched over to a Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday Patreon posting schedule that won't feature the fixed content format I previously used. So, who knows what today's post might feature? Could be Life Drawing or Distressed Damsels content (both of which are featured at least three times per month), or something in the Work Stages, Vintage Con Sketches or Design departments, or possibly something entirely new, such as updates on fantasy test projects The Last Party and The Chaste and the Chained. Golly!
