With this story we get our first views of Emp’s apartment, which will become a very familiar setting throughout the next few thousand pages of Empowered. Emp’s humble abode—rather uncharitably labeled as “shabby” by a recent critic—is loosely based on the apartment I rented when I lived in San Francisco, back at the start of my brilliant career in comics. As I possess very few photos of the old apartment, however, I screwed up its layout to a bizarre degree when I ported it into Empowered; friends from my Bay Area sojourn are often amused by how distorted and unfamiliar the comic-book version of the apartment wound up. “Emp’s front door is where your drawing board should be,” one such friend emailed. “And where did the closet between the living room and kitchen go?” Yeahp, I plumb forgot about that g-d closet.

Sadly, never did follow up on the panel 5 possibility that Emp might have indeed worked part-time at P.J. McJiggleheimer’s, presumably rocking the Hooters-esque tank-top and butt-logoed short shorts seen in the background. Would’ve been interesting to show a chagrined Emp coping with a civilian work uniform almost as degrading and humiliating as her superhero work uniform…
